One more game remains for the San Francisco 49ers this season after all the injuries and other misfortune they have been through, and it is a seemingly meaningless game versus the Arizona Cardinals.
Both teams have been eliminated from playoff contention, but pride always reigns supreme when players step onto the field, and there is no doubt the Niners will want to get a win to end the year.
Quarterback Brock Purdy hurt his elbow late in this past Monday’s game versus the Detroit Lions, and while it was diagnosed as merely a contusion with nerve irritation, there is no reason for the team to risk playing him this weekend.
Therefore, per Adam Schefter, he has been ruled out, along with wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr., cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, offensive lineman Spencer Burford and defensive lineman Robert Beal, Jr.
Ahead of Sunday’s regular-season finale vs. the Cardinals, the 49ers ruled out:
Deebo Samuel Sr. (ribs, wrist)
Brock Purdy (elbow)
Deommodore Lenoir (shoulder)
Spencer Burford (calf)
Robert Beal Jr. (ankle)— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 3, 2025
Purdy was the “Mr. Irrelevent” of the 2022 NFL Draft as the last player taken, and he began that season as the Niners’ third-string quarterback and almost a complete afterthought.
But after starter Trey Lance and backup Jimmy Garoppolo both suffered season-ending injuries, Purdy stepped in under center and immediately proved he was capable of consistently playing at a high level.
His numbers are down this year after he made the Pro Bowl in 2023, but at least some of that has been due to skill players being hurt and the team’s offensive line problems.
Purdy will be due for a huge contract extension once this season ends, and the question is how much will he get paid, as it is almost a certainty that the Niners will give him one in the coming months.
