The Dallas Cowboys haven’t had the season many envisioned for them, but they fought valiantly to remain in the mix despite losing so many key players to injury on both sides of the ball for large portions of the season.
It was believed that Mike McCarthy was coaching for his job this season, given that owner Jerry Jones didn’t give him a contract extension in the offseason.
Now, Dianna Russini of The Athletic is stating that both McCarthy and the Cowboys could look elsewhere in the coming offseason.
“But here’s the twist: Once Jan. 14 hits, McCarthy is free to interview elsewhere without Dallas’s permission. He might do that, and from what I’ve heard, the Cowboys are already doing their homework on potential head coaches, just in case,” Russini wrote.
McCarthy may have restored some faith due to the admirable job the team has done this season without pivotal players such as Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland and DeMarvion Overshown.
However, it’s interesting to note that the Cowboys sticking with McCarthy appears to be at least still possible, which is more than many expected before the season began.
The Cowboys are sure to appeal to outside coaching candidates, but it’s not clear if the job will be open.
